I distinctly remember a conversation with my father when I was in the third grade. I was having trouble in school and I don’t know what he asked me, but I will never forget my response. “I don’t like school. It’s employee training, and I don’t want to be an employee.”
I’ve always been entrepreneurial, I was the child that mowed lawns, raked leaves, and shoveled snow around the neighborhood. In elementary I would sell candy to my classmates and in high school I was selling mixtapes.
Nuri Designs came out of frustration with my job and a lack of execution of my ideas. I had just moved and found myself sitting on the floor in my empty, basement apartment in tears-wondering what in the world I was going to do with myself.
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. ~Leonardo Da Vinci
I was tired of thinking and not doing. Tired of being creative and not creating. Tired of ideating and not executing. Tired of having nothing of my own to show for my potential. I decided to list all of my business ideas and execute on the most practical. It was immediately obvious, I called my sister and asked if she had a sewing machine. “Yes” Can I use it? “Yea come get it, it’s in the closet.”
Four years later we’re here. Bigger and better than I ever imagined, surrounded by so much love and support at times it’s unbelievable. People I thought would never leave have departed, people I never thought I’d meet have arrived. We’ve come so far and still have so much farther to go, it is really just the beginning.
